If you’ve ever felt like ADHD and entrepreneurship are oil and water, I’ve got some good news: they’re actually more like coffee and cream. Sure, ADHD brings a few unique challenges to the table, but it also delivers creativity, resilience, and enough hyperfocus to conquer a small country. The trick is learning how to harness your strengths while navigating the pitfalls—and that’s exactly what we’re here to talk about.
Hi, I’m Cory, a professional procrastinator, serial entrepreneur, and self employed successful business owner with a touch of the ol’ ADHD. I’ve started more side hustles than I can count (seriously, I lost track somewhere around #12), and I’ve learned a thing or two about thriving in the entrepreneurial world with an ADHD brain. Spoiler alert: it’s totally doable, and I’m here to help you figure out how.

The ADHD Entrepreneur Advantage
First things first: ADHD isn’t just a challenge—it’s also a superpower. Here’s why:
- Hyperfocus Mode: When you’re locked in, you’re unstoppable. Use this to knock out big projects or dive deep into learning new skills.
- Creativity in Overdrive: ADHD brains are idea factories. While this can sometimes lead to overwhelm, it’s also your secret weapon for innovation.
- Adaptability: Entrepreneurs need to pivot—a lot. ADHD brains thrive in dynamic environments where flexibility is key.
- Risk-Taking: You’re not afraid to try new things, which is often what entrepreneurship requires.
Hyper focus is 100% my super power. Does anyone else remember the TV show called The Pretender from the late 90s? The main character Jarod could jump into any profession and be more than proficient in the roll after about a day of study.

I REALLY related to that show as a young man but had no idea why until much later in life. Now I’m convinced he was one of us! Fake it till you make it was practically my calling card until I was 30!
If any of this resonates, congrats: you’re already wired for entrepreneurial success. Now, let’s talk about how to work with your brain instead of fighting it.
Common Challenges of ADHD Entrepreneurs (and How to Overcome Them)
Let’s be real: ADHD isn’t all rainbows and fictional geniuses. It comes with its fair share of challenges—but don’t worry, there are ways to tackle them head-on. Let’s explore a few of the more common ones.
1. Shiny Object Syndrome
ADHD brains love novelty. Unfortunately, this can lead to starting 10 projects at once and finishing none of them.
Solution:
- Create a “Shiny Object Parking Lot”: Every time a new idea strikes, jot it down in a dedicated notebook or app. This lets you capture the idea without derailing your current project.
- Stick to One Big Goal at a Time: Break it into smaller milestones so you can still get that much needed win as you achieve progress.
2. Time Management Woes
ADHD and time management go together like oil and… well they just don’t go together. I’ve wasted an entire day drafting out a business plan for a business I wasn’t even in at the time. It had zero relevance to what I was trying to accomplish, it just struck me as a fun project at the time.
Solution:
- Use Timers: The Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of work, 5 minutes of break) can work wonders for staying on task.
- Outsource Accountability: Find an accountability buddy, coach, a group of peers, or even an app to help keep you on track.
- Batch Tasks: Group similar tasks together (e.g., write all your emails at once) to minimize distractions.
A little planning goes a long way. Keep yourself on task by knowing what task you should be working on and focus your efforts.

3. Overwhelm and Paralysis
Big projects can feel like staring up at Mount Everest—overwhelming and impossible to tackle. We’re not wired for that kind of thinking… Well, I’m not.
I have to ignore the forest and focus on the trees. Small chunks, achievable goals. I’m not saying you should ignore the big picture, but once you see it, refocus on what can be done first and what can be done now!
Solution:
- Break It Down: Divide your project into micro-tasks. Instead of “build a website,” start with “choose a template.”
- Celebrate Small Wins: Each step completed is progress—treat it like the victory it is.
Pro Tip: If you’re an entrepreneur with ADHD and you don’t own a whiteboard, go get one, I’ll wait. Seriously, stop reading right here and go to Walmart and get a whiteboard! It’ll change your life.
4. Consistency Issues
Sticking with something long-term can feel like dragging a cat to water. Not sticking with things is kind of our defining trait in other peoples eyes.
This IS a weakness we have but it’s also part of our super powers. What they don’t see (and honestly neither did I for a long time), is that each time we pivot or change directions, we’re learning, growing, developing our skills and knowledge and applying what we already learned to new things.

That said, even superman didn’t walk around with his laser eyes burning all the time, he had to learn to control it. So what can we do?
Solution:
- Automate Wherever Possible: Use tools to handle repetitive tasks (e.g., email marketing software, scheduling apps).
- Build Routines Around Your Energy: Identify when you’re most productive and schedule important tasks during those windows.
- Delegate: Hire help for tasks you struggle to stay consistent with—like social media posting or bookkeeping.
- Learn & Grow: If you feel yourself losing interest, learn something new in your business. switch focus for a bit and get excited about a different part of your current business.
ADHD-Friendly Hustle Hacks
Now that we’ve tackled some challenges, let’s talk about practical hacks that make running a business with ADHD not just manageable but enjoyable.
1. Pick the Right Hustle
Not all side hustles are created equal—especially for ADHD brains. Look for hustles with:
- Quick Feedback Loops: You’ll stay motivated when you see results fast.
- Creative Freedom: Think design, writing, or crafting.
- Built-In Flexibility: Freelancing, flipping items, or digital products are great options.

2. Use Tools That Work With Your Brain
The right tools can be game-changers. We have advantages over the “normies” but we also have deficiencies and we can make up for them with the right tools. Here are some ADHD-friendly options:
- Task Management: Trello, Asana, or Notion.
- Timers: Focus Booster or TomatoTimer.
- Distraction Blockers: Freedom or StayFocusd.
Look for ways to subsidize your weaknesses, try some tools and find out what works best for you. In fact, if you can’t find a tool to help you with something you’re struggling with, that might just be a new opportunity to build one… Never mind, don’t do that, stay on task! Dang brain!

3. Embrace the Wins
ADHD brains thrive on novelty and excitement. Create a list of quick, rewarding activities you can use to boost focus or motivation when you’re feeling stuck. For example:
- Snack Time – Look, I’m food motivated and it works, this ain’t a health blog!
- Brainstorming – Calling a friend for a quick brainstorm session. If you can find a friend who’s not annoyed with this kind of thing, brainstorming sessions can be extremely rewarding on the mental front.
- Pause for Prime – That’s right, I’m not a Netflix and chill kinda guy but I’ll veg out and recharge watching something on Prime for an hour.
The point is, find something you enjoy that serves as a reward for your milestones. It’s ok to give yourself a pat on the back once in awhile.
Building a Community Matters
If you don’t know it by now, I hate to be the guy that breaks the news but entrepreneurship can be lonely, and ADHD can amplify that. Connecting with a supportive community makes all the difference.
That’s why I created Serial Entrepreneurs Anonymous: ADHD Side Hustlers Unite—a Facebook group where ADHD entrepreneurs can share wins, trade tips, and laugh at the chaos together.
👉 Join the group and introduce yourself!
Final Thoughts: Thriving with ADHD
Being an ADHD entrepreneur isn’t about fixing yourself—it’s about understanding yourself and building a business that works with your brain instead of against it. Embrace your creativity, leverage your hyperfocus, and don’t be afraid to pivot when something isn’t working.
Remember, every small step forward is progress. Whether you’re starting your first hustle or refining your 15th, you’ve got this.
Now go out there and thrive, one small win at a time. 🚀
