So, you’ve been hearing about freelancing, working from anywhere, setting your own hours, being your own boss. Sounds dreamy, right? But there’s just one thing holding you back: you have zero experience. Nada. Zilch.

You’re not alone, and here’s the good news: you don’t need a fancy resume or years of experience to dive into freelancing. All you need is some determination, a willingness to learn, and this guide (you’re already winning).

By the end of this post, you’ll know how to start freelancing with no experience and feel ready to land your first gig. Plus, I’ll sprinkle in some insider tips that I wish I had when I was starting out. Let’s get you earning!

What is Freelancing and Why Should You Start?

Freelancing means offering your skills or services on a project-by-project basis rather than being tied to a traditional 9-to-5. To be perfectly clear, you are still trading your time for money, just like a normal job, but you get to be the boss.

Think of it as being your own mini-business. Popular freelancing gigs include writing, graphic design, virtual assistance, social media management, and even voice-over work. With a bit of traction and discovering which parts of freelancing you enjoy the most, you can scale this side hustle into a full blown agency! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we’re just dipping our toes in here.

Why freelancing is perfect for beginners:

  • Flexibility: Work when and where you want. Schedule and location independence can not be over stated here. Even more valuable than the money in my opinion is the ability to work when and where you want!
  • Low Barriers to Entry: No fancy degrees required. Heck, no fancy anything truth be told. If you can snag an old chrome book, you can dive into freelancing. You just need the ability to get on the internet.
  • Scalable Income: Start small and grow as you gain experience. Freelancing is a fantastic path to take if you just wanna start with a job or two a month. You can take on as much or as little as you want. When (if) you decide to scale up, the sky is the limit.

Step 1: Identify Your Skills (Hint: You Already Have Them)

Freelancing with no experience doesn’t mean you have no skills. Start by asking yourself:

  • What do I already enjoy doing?
  • What tasks am I naturally good at?

Pro Tip: Ask your friends and family what ‘they think’ you are good at or enjoy doing. You may get some more valuable answers. We tend to be our own worst critics.

Here are examples of beginner-friendly freelance skills:

  • Writing (blog posts, product descriptions, social media captions).
  • Administrative work (email management, scheduling, data entry).
  • Design (basic Canva graphics).
  • Social media (creating posts, engagement).

Not sure if any of these tasks feel right for you? Checkout some more freelance jobs and so much more in our post The Secret Framework Behind Every Successful Side Hustle.

💡 Pro Tip: Even if your skills feel basic, someone out there needs help with exactly that. Also, no matter your skill level, if you’ve done something once, you’ve done it more than someone else out there who could benefit from your experience!

Step 2: Choose a Beginner-Friendly Freelance Platform

Not all platforms are created equal, and some are better for beginners:

  • Fiverr: Great for quick, small gigs like creating social media posts or basic graphic designs.
  • Upwork: Offers a range of projects, including entry-level gigs.
  • Freelancer: Perfect for testing the waters without committing.

Pro Tip: Focus on platforms that let you showcase your strengths without competing with high-end professionals right away.

Step 3: Build a Portfolio (Even If It’s Fake at First)

Ok, I’m not saying you should lie to your future customers here! That said, when clients are choosing a freelancer, they want to see proof that you can do the work. Here’s how to create a portfolio when you’re just starting:

  • Mock Projects: Create a few examples of your work, like a blog post, logo, or social media content. Sure, maybe you didn’t create these for pay, but you DID create them and they do a good job of conveying what your abilities are.
  • Volunteer: Offer your services to friends, family, or nonprofits in exchange for testimonials. Seriously! ask a friend or local business if you can create a free instagram post for them and see how fast they take you up on it!
  • Showcase It Online: Use a free portfolio site like Behance or a simple Google Drive folder to share your work. You need some way for a prospective client to see your work. Even a simple Facebook page or Instagram account could work here.

Step 4: Create a Winning Profile

When you setup your profile on freelance platforms, put some effort into it. Your profile is your first impression. Make it count:

  • Write a Killer Headline: “Social Media Manager Helping Brands Boost Engagement.”
  • Craft a Compelling Bio: Highlight your skills, enthusiasm, and willingness to go above and beyond.
  • Include Keywords: Use terms like “beginner-friendly freelance writer” or “virtual assistant with no experience” to appear in searches.

Step 5: Land Your First Gig (Yes, It’s Possible!)

Now for the exciting part, securing your first freelance job. There’s nothing like getting that first real paying job as a freelancer! Here’s how to increase your chances:

  • Bid Smart: Focus on smaller, lower-paying gigs to build your reviews. Be hungry and willing to go the extra mile.
  • Customize Your Proposal: Avoid copy-pasting; tailor each proposal to the client’s needs. Don’t be afraid to show some personality and be authentic.
  • Be Honest About Your Experience: Clients value enthusiasm and a willingness to learn just as much as experience. Let’s be honest, a client paying $20 for a $40 job already knows they ain’t getting the top industry talent. Use that to your advantage.

Step 6: Learn as You Go (You Don’t Have to Be Perfect)

No one expects you to be a pro from day one. Use your first projects as a learning opportunity. Start defining your processes, storage practices, templates, whatever you may do that’s repeatable is an opportunity to build a process that makes it easier each time you do it:

  • Ask for feedback from clients to improve your skills.
  • Take advantage of free or affordable resources, like YouTube tutorials or Skillshare, to build expertise.
  • Setup a Google account and start using the drive, docs, sheets, and whatever free tools you can utilize.

Step 7: Scale Your Freelance Business

Once you’ve got a few projects under your belt, it’s time to level up:

  • Raise Your Rates: As your skills and reviews grow, don’t be afraid to charge more. In fact, I have a rule for this… If you get more work than you have time, you are not charing enough!
  • Specialize: Niching down can make you stand out (e.g., social media captions for beauty brands). Once you have a few jobs under your belt, you’ll start to realize you enjoy some tasks more than others. Focus on those, they are your perfect fit!
  • Expand Your Services: Offer add-ons like content scheduling or analytics reports. Anytime you can think of a great upsell product or service to add to your offerings, give it a try and see how it goes. You never know where your next home run offering will come from.

As you grow, you may find that even your most loved tasks are taking more time than you have. At this point, you may be able to start bringing on other freelancers.

Outsourcing work is a great way to start expanding your freelance agency empire! Get some experience then try out a few freelancers as you go to get a feel for how you do with managing other freelancers.
