Let’s be real for a second: starting a side hustle is hard. You dive in with excitement, dreams of making extra cash or even replacing your 9-to-5, but then reality hits. The work piles up, progress is slower than you expected, and you start wondering if it’s all worth it. Sound familiar?

Trust me, you’re not alone.

Here’s the thing, building a successful side hustle takes time, patience, and yes, motivation. Staying motivated isn’t just about being positive; it’s about having strategies to push through when the going gets tough. So, let’s dig into some practical tips to keep your head in the game and your side hustle on track.

1. Start with Your ‘Why’

I know, you’ve probably heard this mumbo jumbo a million times. “What’s your Why?”. But there’s a reason you keep hearing it! It’s true!

Having a good reason for doing something makes doing it much easier when the times get tough. Let’s use an analogy for a second…

Imagine there were two contests on the same day to see who could run a 100 yard dash the fastest. One had a prize of a brand new snickers bar while the other had a prize of a one year paid vacation so you could spend a whole year with your family.

I bet I can guess which one you’ll work harder to win! Ok, so “Why”?

Simply put, you either wanted to avoid work for a year and that’s your why, or you wanted to take advantage of your time with family without losing 8-10hours of that time each day and that’s your why. Both valid, both motivating enough to keep you pushing to the finish line.

Ok, so “Why” did you start this side hustle in the first place? Is it to pay off debt? Save for a dream vacation? Build something bigger for yourself? Whatever your reason, keep it front and center. Write it down, slap it on a sticky note, or make it your phone’s wallpaper. When you’re in the trenches, reconnecting with your “why” can give you the boost you need.

2. Set Small, Achievable Goals

One of the quickest ways to lose motivation is setting goals so big they feel impossible. Instead, break your goals into bite-sized pieces. Want to earn $1,000 a month? Start with $100. Need to write 10 blog posts? Focus on one. Small wins create momentum, and momentum is a motivator.

At the very least, take that bigger goal if you must have one and break it down into small goals that lead you there. Make sure your goals are achievable is the key takeaway here.

3. Celebrate the Wins (Even the Small Ones)

Got your first sale? Hit a milestone? Heck, even finishing a task you’ve been putting off is worth celebrating. Motivation grows when you take time to acknowledge your progress. It’s not all about the end goal; it’s about enjoying the journey.

Reward yourself with some downtime. In the beginning, this is more difficult that it sounds. You’re excited, all you can think about is pushing forward and growing your new side hustle. Listen carefully, this is important, Reward Yourself With Som Downtime!

Force yourself to step away and think about something else. Break your focus away from your side hustle periodically so you don’t burn yourself out.

As someone who tends to hyper focus on tasks, I can tell you from experience that burning 80 hours in a week to jumpstart a startup will more times than not rob those hours from when they are really important, when things are less exciting.

The least exciting moments in business are often the ones that produce the most reward. Save some fuel for it!

4. Don’t Compare Your Chapter 1 to Someone Else’s Chapter 20

Social media makes it way too easy to see someone else’s highlight reel and think, “Why am I even trying?” But here’s the thing: You’re seeing their now, not their start. Focus on your own path, and remember that everyone starts somewhere.

Comparison is the thief of joy, if you have to compare something, compare where you are now to where you were yesterday. If YOU are progressing forward, you’re winning, period!

Feel free to be inspired by others, but only compare yourself to yourself.

5. Get Comfortable with Setbacks

Every side hustle comes with challenges; failed ideas, slow sales, or days where nothing seems to go right. These setbacks aren’t signs to quit; they’re opportunities to learn. Instead of seeing obstacles as roadblocks, view them as stepping stones.

If something doesn’t work, don’t just write it off, reflect on it later and ask yourself “what did I learn from this”. A good way to visualize this is the following…

If you start the same business 10 times in a row under different names, which one do you think will startup quicker and be more successful? If you guessed the 10th, you’d be spot on!

The reason is, you learned along the way. You made mistakes that you didn’t have to repeat and you retained knowledge that you had to fight for in the early days that is now second nature. You can’t help it really, you’re going to learn from your successes and your failures rather you like it or not!

6. Make Time for Yourself

Ok, we touched on this a bit in #3 but it’s important and worthy of its own section. Burnout is real, and it’s a motivation killer. Build breaks into your schedule, even if it’s just 15 minutes to take a walk or an afternoon to unplug. When you take care of yourself, you’re in a better headspace to tackle your hustle.

Burnout is the killer of more businesses than probably any other factor. Excitement drives us to over extend and over work ourselves to the point that small issues or obstacles feel like giant problems.

One day you’re crushing it and the next you just don’t even want to open your laptop. We’ve probably all been there.

Breaks and downtime (required) are a good way to prevent burnout. But what do you do if you’re already there?

If I could definitively answer this question, I’d never need another side hustle in my life. I’d bottle that answer and sell it to the highest bidder today! But I CAN tell you what works for me…

My burnout usually comes from boredom, not over working. If things get boring or routine, or I am not learning or growing my skills in any way, burnout starts sinking in. So to pull myself out of the funk, as soon as I recognize the signs of burnout, I give myself the task of learning something new that can help the business.

I don’t care that I am ignoring my todo list for today, If it’s not vital to the business being here tomorrow, it can wait while I go learn something, or challenge myself in some way.

That usually turns things around for me. What are some of the things that work for you? Leave us a comment below and let us know!

7. Revisit Your Strategy

If you’re feeling stuck, it might be time to tweak your approach. Are your goals realistic? Is your niche the right fit? Does your side hustle align with your skills and interests? Sometimes, a small pivot can reignite your passion.

Sometimes a business I’m starting ends up being a whole other business by the time it’s off the ground. Don’t get discouraged! this is all part of the process.
